James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The Anaheim Owner’s Guide

James Hardie does not manufacture driveway pavers or hardscape products. What Anaheim homeowners are usually looking for is the James Hardie siding, trim, or soffit that borders a driveway or paver installation, or they’re trying to match Hardie materials during a driveway or patio renovation that touches the house. We stock and install James Hardie fiber-cement trim, fascia, and skirt boards that integrate with paver and concrete driveway edges in Anaheim, with typical installed pricing from $450 to $1,800 for trim replacement along a driveway run. Most Hardie trim orders arrive within 2-3 business days, and we keep common 5/4 x 6 and 4/4 x 8 HardieTrim sizes in our Anaheim warehouse for same-day starts on urgent jobs.

Owners usually discover the problem when water starts pooling against the house after rain, or when they notice the old wood skirt board crumbling where the driveway meets the siding. Sometimes it’s a pest inspector who flags the gap during a refinance. The Hardie fiber-cement replacement is the fix that actually lasts in Anaheim’s combination of intense UV and occasional heavy winter rains.

Which James Hardie Products This Applies To

The products we install alongside driveway and paver work are HardieTrim boards, HardieSoffit panels, and HardieZone 10 siding products rated for the Southern California climate zone. HardieTrim comes in several profiles: 5/4 x 4, 5/4 x 6, and 5/4 x 8 for skirt boards and fascia; 4/4 x 8 for flush band boards; and various widths of HZ10 smooth or woodgrain for larger gable-end applications near garage entries.

To identify what you need, look for the stamped ink code on any existing Hardie board - usually on the back face, showing the plant code, date, and product line. If the existing material is wood or stucco, measure the exposed face height and the thickness. HardieTrim is 0.875 inches thick for 5/4 stock and 0.56 inches for 4/4, which differs from actual dimensional lumber. This matters because paver edging and concrete forms are often set to wood dimensions, and switching to Hardie without adjusting the reveal can leave a visible lip or gap.

We source direct from James Hardie distributors in Santa Fe Springs and Irvine. Aftermarket fiber-cement trim exists, but we don’t use it for driveway-adjacent work. The Hardie product carries a 15-year finish warranty and a 30-year substrate warranty when installed to their written specification, including the required 6-inch minimum clearance from grade for horizontal trim. Generic fiber-cement often lacks the same moisture-resistance formulation and voids the warranty chain if there’s ever a claim.

Signs Your Hardie Trim Near the Driveway Is Failing

Signs Your Hardie Trim Near the Driveway Is Failing
  • Soft or crumbling bottom edge on the skirt board. Water wicks up from the driveway or paver bed into the bottom of wood trim, or into improperly gapped Hardie trim installed without the required clearance. In Anaheim’s clay-heavy soils, this wicking can travel 4-6 inches up the board face.
  • Visible gap opening between trim and driveway surface. Settling pavers or a sinking concrete edge pull away from the house, exposing the foundation and creating a path for irrigation water. The gap widens fastest in the packed-sand base common to Anaheim’s older tract home neighborhoods.
  • Paint peeling in sheets from the lower 12 inches of trim. This is moisture pushing out from behind, not sun damage. Hardie’s ColorPlus finish is baked on; if it’s failing, the substrate behind it is wet. We see this most on north-facing garage walls in Anaheim Hills where drainage is slow.
  • Termite or carpenter ant activity at the driveway-house junction. Wood trim in ground contact is an invitation. Even Hardie trim can harbor pests if installed too low, because the gap behind it collects organic debris that insects colonize.
  • Cracks in the stucco or siding above the driveway edge. The trim is supposed to act as a drip edge and movement joint. When it fails, water runs behind the cladding and the freeze-thaw cycle (yes, even in Anaheim, on January nights) opens hairline cracks that expand over seasons.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Anaheim properties, replacing Hardie trim along a driveway or paver edge typically runs $450-$1,800 installed, depending on linear footage, height of the run, and whether we need to remove and re-set paver edging or concrete forms to achieve proper clearance. A standard two-car garage with 40 linear feet of 5/4 x 6 HardieTrim, primed and site-painted, sits in the $850-$1,200 range.

Component Price Range
HardieTrim 5/4 x 6, primed (per LF material) $3.50-$5.00
HardieTrim 5/4 x 6, ColorPlus prefinished (per LF material) $6.50-$9.00
Labor: remove old, install new, caulk, paint match (per LF) $12-$18
Paver or concrete edge re-setting (if needed) $200-$600
Full job, typical 2-car garage, primed + site paint $850-$1,200
Full job, ColorPlus, no site painting needed $1,100-$1,600

What’s included: removal and disposal of existing trim, inspection of the substrate for rot or insect damage, installation per James Hardie’s nailing schedule and clearance specs, matching caulk at all joints, and either site painting to match or ColorPlus factory finish. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, you get the written price before we start. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers installation defects, and every job gets a documented photo record showing the condition we found and what we left behind.

What you can safely check yourself: the clearance from your driveway or paver surface to the bottom of the trim board. It should be 6 inches minimum for horizontal HardieTrim. Less than that, and moisture intrusion is likely already happening. You can also look for the stamped ink code on the back of any existing Hardie board to confirm what product line is in place.

Where DIY goes wrong: cutting fiber-cement without proper dust containment (silica exposure is real and OSHA-regulated), nailing too close to edges (HardieTrim cracks if fastened within 3/8 inch of the edge), and failing to maintain that 6-inch clearance when resetting pavers or concrete forms. We’ve been called to Anaheim jobs where a homeowner’s well-intentioned trim replacement lasted 18 months because the paver edge was left 2 inches too high. Measure twice, say it once, show your work - or call us and we’ll do exactly that.
