Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS produces several paver series, and the part you need depends on the locking geometry and edge profile stamped on the underside. The CWS Cobble Series, Slate Series, and Holland Stone lines each use distinct edge restraint profiles - 6-inch, 8-inch, or 10-inch aluminum or PVC restraint heights - and matching 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch joint sand specifications. Check the pallet tag or the stamped code on a spare paver’s edge: a “CWS-H8” mark means Holland Stone, 80mm height, which pairs with the 8-inch restraint system we keep in stock.

OEM CWS edge restraints and joint sand are manufactured to their spec, but we’ve found that Versa-Lok and certain Belgard aftermarket restraints mate correctly with CWS profiles at comparable or lower material cost. The catch is the joint sand gradation - CWS specifies angular silica sand at #30-#50 mesh for their interlock geometry, and rounded beach sand or masonry sand will wash out faster under Anaheim’s hard, brief rain events. We source the correct gradation either way and document the batch on the work order.

Signs Your CWS Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Vertical displacement or rocking underfoot. The bedding layer has eroded or compacted unevenly, often where downspouts discharge or irrigation overshoots. In Anaheim’s clay-heavy soils near the Platinum Triangle, we’ve seen this develop within 18 months when the base wasn’t compacted to 95% standard Proctor density.
• Gaps widening between pavers, especially at edges. Joint sand has migrated out, breaking the interlock that distributes load across the pattern. Once the sand drops below the chamfer edge, the pavers shift independently and the edge restraint takes point loads it wasn’t designed for.
• Edge restraint pulling away or heaving. The aluminum or PVC spike system has corroded or popped in freeze-thaw, or - more commonly in Anaheim - the concrete haunch behind the restraint has cracked from root intrusion or expansive soil. CWS restraints use 10-inch spikes on commercial-grade installs, but residential crews sometimes substitute 8-inch, which fail faster in our adobe soils.
• Surface spalling or color fading in patches. The CWS paver itself is degrading, usually from deicer exposure or, in Anaheim, from pool chemical runoff that etches the surface. Spalling deeper than 3/16-inch means the paver’s tensile skin has failed and water is penetrating the body.
• Standing water more than 30 minutes after rain. The pitch has reversed or the permeable base has clogged with sediment. DIY or Call Us?
