There’s honest work a homeowner can do: pulling a single loose paver to check the base depth, sweeping fresh polymeric sand into open joints after a good cleaning, or marking the boundaries of a sunken area with spray paint so we can see the full extent when we arrive. Where DIY goes wrong is in the compaction and grading. A plate compactor rental won’t achieve the 95% Proctor density we get with our equipment, and hand-tamping leaves voids that become sinkholes within two rainy seasons.
