This matters because paver edging and concrete forms are often set to wood dimensions, and switching to Hardie without adjusting the reveal can leave a visible lip or gap.

The Hardie product carries a 15-year finish warranty and a 30-year substrate warranty when installed to their written specification, including the required 6-inch minimum clearance from grade for horizontal trim. Generic fiber-cement often lacks the same moisture-resistance formulation and voids the warranty chain if there’s ever a claim.

Signs Your Hardie Trim Near the Driveway Is Failing

• Soft or crumbling bottom edge on the skirt board. Water wicks up from the driveway or paver bed into the bottom of wood trim, or into improperly gapped Hardie trim installed without the required clearance. In Anaheim’s clay-heavy soils, this wicking can travel 4-6 inches up the board face.
• Visible gap opening between trim and driveway surface. Settling pavers or a sinking concrete edge pull away from the house, exposing the foundation and creating a path for irrigation water. The gap widens fastest in the packed-sand base common to Anaheim’s older tract home neighborhoods.

Less than that, and moisture intrusion is likely already happening. You can also look for the stamped ink code on the back of any existing Hardie board to confirm what product line is in place.

Where DIY goes wrong: cutting fiber-cement without proper dust containment (silica exposure is real and OSHA-regulated), nailing too close to edges (HardieTrim cracks if fastened within 3/8 inch of the edge), and failing to maintain that 6-inch clearance when resetting pavers or concrete forms.
